SHAPING (NOT GATHERING) REQUIREMENTS
The Challenge
In order for us to build, the project team needed to collect requirements from the business. Since this process was so new, there wasn’t a clear idea on what these requirements were.
The Approach
We conducted an extensive series of workshops, approximately 7 two-hour sessions in total. The goal of these sessions were to:
Unpack the requirements in more detail
Align the team on how things would work
Identify potential blockers, either from a technical, data or business POV
To maximise the effectiveness of each session, we heavily relied on the use of visuals, metaphors, and other creative techniques to foster a shared understanding of the problem at hand.
The Outcome
This was all such new territory for everyone (including the client), so the project team ended up playing a bigger role in shaping up requirements than what would happen in a typical project. There was a collective ownership of decisions among the team, along with a shared understanding of why they were made.
Despite the marathon number of sessions, we were able to successfully get the information we needed to deliver. I was often praised for my skill in making lengthy workshops enjoyable (as crazy as that sounds).
